This 6-day / 5-night tour connects two very different Indias. First, Mumbai – the fast, glamorous "City of Dreams", financial capital and home of Bollywood. Then the ancient world of the Ajanta and Ellora caves, carved into basalt cliffs over 1,500 years ago.
In Mumbai you will see the Gateway of India, stroll along Marine Drive, watch the open-air laundry of Dhobi Ghat and join a respectful community-led tour of Dharavi. A ferry takes you to the Elephanta Caves, and you go behind the scenes of a Bollywood film studio.
A short flight brings you to Aurangabad, base for the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Ajanta, famous for its Buddhist paintings, and Ellora, with the monumental Kailasa Temple cut from a single rock. The Ajanta Caves (2nd century BC – 6th century AD) are a horseshoe of 30 Buddhist halls painted with scenes from the Jataka tales. The 34 caves of Ellora (6th–10th century) show Hindu, Buddhist and Jain art side by side. The Kailasa Temple (Cave 16) was carved top-down from a single basalt cliff, removing an estimated 200,000 tonnes of rock. Note: Ajanta is closed on Mondays and Ellora on Tuesdays – we plan your days accordingly.
